| Amethyst
clusters from the Magaliesberg area of South
Africa. As far as we know amethyst crystals in this form before have not
been found anywhere else in the world. They are characterized by the tiny
crystals that envelop the shaft of the main crystal. A friend, having
looked under magnification remarked that it looks like a miniature
landscape. The name Spirit
Amethyst is now emerging and I like that. These mineral specimens are also being called cactus
quartz, fairy quartz, angel and porcupine . We have just
received some that are clear quartz as opposed to the more common amethyst
coloring.
These amethyst rock specimens are being marketed as a brand new find but in fact have been a well kept secret. They appear in the book "Minerals of South Africa" with a photo dating back to 1987. The mine location of the digs has always been a closely kept secret and for some time these unusual crystals disappeared into the "myths" of time. Suddenly they are available again. I was given a quartz crystal matrix some time ago which came from the same area and displays somewhat similarly to these crystals. It came to me from old miner who told me he had found it over 55 years ago. At the time I had not seen any of the Magaliesberg amethyst so did not think to ask him exactly where he got it. This spirit amethyst has a dual pointed termination and a hint of red hematite on one side. There is slight scuffing to the point. The crystals on the shaft are somewhat larger than usual and this gives the crystal a deeper energy which would work well with healing at all levels. | Spirit Quartz is similar Spirit Amethyst in appearance and formation. It also comes out of the Northern areas of South Africa and seems to be formed in the same way. In other words tiny crystals forming around a pre-existing quartz scepter. It must form at lower temperatures as there is no amethyst coloration. The hint of iron oxide suggests to me that it has been formed in the presence of water. This may well explain the gentle flowing metaphysical energy it has. I have not had time to work with this stone at any great level but it certainly has a flowing and calming energy and a real sense of purity about them. I only managed to obtain three pieces.
